Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from MMA after a successful title defense against Justin Gaethje in 2020.
George St. Pierre hasn’t fought since his submission win over Michael Bisping back in 2017.
UFC President Dana White continues working to book the Khabib vs. St. Pierre fight.
Between 2021 and 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov dominated the UFC’s lightweight division. The Dagestan-based fighter went undefeated during his run in MMA and retired from the sport after securing an impressive second-round submission of Justin Gaethje. Interestingly, UFC President Dana White still seems interested in booking the Khabib vs. St. Pierre fight.
For years, fans have been calling for Khabib to compete against George St. Pierre in the ring. It seems like a longshot at this point, however, as GSP has been retired since 2017. Now is a great time to talk about what could lead to this bout coming together.
Let’s get into it!
Fans Continue to Question the Legitimacy of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Retirement
The UFC’s lightweight division is one of the most storied and competitive weight classes in all of MMA. It’s here that legendary fighters such as BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, and Ben Henderson made their mark in MMA. In more recent years, Khabib Nurmagomedov ruled over this division with an iron fist.
Khabib won the lightweight title back in April of 2018. He went on to defend this title on three different occasions against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. He announced his retirement from MMA after the final win over Gaethje on Fight Island.
MMA fans had never seen the level of grappling and control that Khabib brought to the Octagon. As his MMA career progressed, he also rapidly improved his striking arsenal. This combination of elite grappling with powerful striking made him one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in history.
Many fans continue to question the legitimacy of Nurmagomedov’s retirement. He is still just 32 years old and could likely continue fighting for years if he wanted to. Khabib accomplished just about everything one can in the sport, however, and seems content with his career.
There is one name that fans continue to press Khabib on. That, of course, is former UFC welterweight champion, George St. Pierre. Many have compared Khabib to GSP and continue to debate how a fight between them might play out.
It seems that officials within the UFC are also interested in seeing how this fight could play out. That includes the President of the UFC, Dana White.
Dana White Tried to Book the Khabib vs. St. Pierre Fight Again
Dana White has a knack for booking the biggest possible fights in the UFC. Love him or hate him, there is no doubt he remains a hugely important figure in the sport. It seems he still wants to see Khabib Nurmagomedov continue his fighting career.
Khabib spoke to the media this week about his former fighting career and future plans. At one point, he claims that White once again reached out to him about a possible fight with GSP. He shot the idea down, claiming St. Pierre is happy in retirement and doesn’t seem interested in a fight.
“[Dana] sent me a message and said, ‘Hey, Georges St-Pierre wants to fight with you,’” Nurmagomedov said. “I said, ‘What can I do?’ I don’t know. I’m finished, you know? I think Georges is finished, too, you know. Let this guy be a legend. He’s 40 years old and I don’t understand why he has to fight. I think he has money, too. I’m finished. I’m really finished.”
It’s not a surprise to hear that Dana White still wants to book the Khabib vs. St. Pierre fight. Even in retirement, these two men remain some of the biggest stars in MMA. A fight between them would likely end up drawing in a massive number of Pay-Per-View buys.
The UFC’s lightweight division continues to move forward. Charles Oliveira won the division’s title back in May against Michael Chandler. It now appears that Dustin Poirier is next in line for the belt after his victory over Conor McGregor last weekend.
It’s a fun time for the 155-pound weight class. Now might be the perfect time to look at how Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier match up against one another.
Odds on Oliveira vs. Poirier are Now Available Online
Some MMA fans felt that the lightweight division would be left in limbo after Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from the sport. That simply hasn’t been the case. There are still a huge number of exciting fighters in the division and it’s more competitive than ever before.
Charles Oliveira has proven himself to be one of the best fighters in the sport. He hasn’t lost since 2017 and has recorded incredible wins over fighters like Kevin Lee, Tony Ferguson, and Michael Chandler. His combination of world-class jiu-jitsu and dangerous kickboxing makes him a dangerous test for any opponent.
Dustin Poirier is now the next man in line for the title. Poirier has also looked incredible lately, losing only once since 2016. He seems to be getting better with every fight, as well, and is riding high on confidence after two wins over Conor McGregor.
BetOnline is now offering the best odds on Oliveira vs. Poirier. At the moment, Charles is listed as the +155 underdog. Poirier comes in as the -180 favorite. Both men are finishers and it seems highly likely that their bout will conclude before reaching the judge’s scorecards.
There are plenty of other great lightweights pushing hard to secure a title shot. That includes Conor McGregor, who will need to rehab his leg injury before making a return to the cage. We’ll be sure to offer updates on the next contender for the belt over the next few months.
