Dern is coming off a first round submission victory over Nina Nunes ( nee Ansaroff ) at UFC Vegas 23 last April to skyrocket in the UFC women’s featherweight rankings. With the victory, Dern has now won her last four bouts, three of them via armbar submission with all three victories earning her Performance of the Night bonuses.
The 28-year old grappling and BJJ prodigy has not lost since dropping a unanimous decision to Amanda Ribas last October 12, 2019 in her first bout back since giving birth to her first child. With her string of victories, Dern has now moved up to no. 6 in the UFC women’s strawweight rankings and a victory over Rodriguez will move her inside the Top 5 for the first time.
A veteran of 101 grappling matches, Dern entered the UFC in 2018 after starting her MMA career with Legacy FC, LFA, and Invicta FC. She has an MMA record of 11-1 with seven victories by submission. She is the UFC’s most hyped female prospect since Ronda Rousey and is starting to live up to that billing now.

While MacKenzie Dern is making her first appearance in a main event bout, Marina Rodriguez will be fighting in her second consecutive headliner after he last bout against Michelle Waterson was promoted to main event status following the injury suffered by T.J. Dillashaw.
In that bout, Rodriguez defeated Waterson 49-46, 48-46, and 48-47 in a bout where she dominated from start to finish. That victory was her second straight of 2021 as the 34-year old Brazilian recorded a second round TKO win over Amanda Ribas at UFC 257 last January. As stated earlier, Ribas dealt Dern her only loss in an MMA fight.
Since earning her UFC contract at the Dana White Contender Series Brazil 2 in 2018, she has posted a record of 4-1-2 with her only defeat a narrow split decision loss to former straw weight champion Carla Esparza. Rodriguez has a record of 14-1 with wins via knockout and one victory via submission. She is currently the number 5 ranked female straw weight in the UFC and a win over Dern would put her closer to her first ever crack at the world title.
